Search Engine Optimization (SEO) is one of the most crucial elements of E-Commerce. Google- and all other major search engines - urge you to have a good SEO practice when you build your website. A good webmaster should follow SEO guideline for any search engine. Stay away from Black Hat SEO team at any cost. They might bring your web site up in the rank quickly and they will make web site go down even faster. The following are some pitfalls that every webmaster or web site owners should not do.
Avoid hidden text or hidden links:
If any text or link is invisible to the website visitor but can be seen by search engines spiders then they are considered hidden. In the past, webmaster would simply make the text white on a white background so the reader can’t see that words but the search engine can detect them. Now that search engines have built in algorithms to spot this today. So it is best to avoid it altogether.
Don't employ cloaking or sneaky redirects:
Cloaking is when website or web pages are set up to display different content for a search engine spider versus a human user. Cloaking usually delivers one version of a page to the viewer user and a different version to a search engine. There are very few good reasons for cloaking as well, such as targeted advertising, but if you are trying to manipulate your rankings in the search engines then your site could be penalized or banned.
Don't send automated queries to Google: This includes using any software that sends queries to determine how a web site or a web page is ranking in Google. Also meta-searching Google and performing offline searches on Google.
Don't load pages with irrelevant words:
This is practice loved and cherished by the SEO “experts”, of adding irrelevant words to pages. It means that the page comes up as a result of a key word search but the keyword doesn’t have anything to do with that web site. Proper keyword usage highlights your legitimate content and also does keyword load.
Don't create multiple pages or web sites with duplicate content:
Duplicate content involves setting up multiple websites with the same content or having several pages on a site with essentially the same information but different keywords inserted here and there. Of course, someone may have copied the content on your site and put it on their site. Since the search engines do not make any distinction on who had the content first make sure no other site is using your content. You can do this by performing a search using some of your text with quotation marks (") around it. If you do find someone is using your original copy, visit www.google.com/dmca.html to learn more about copyright infringement.
Don't create pages that install viruses, trojans, or other badware.
Badware is bad and Google does not approve of it. Google has done a great deal to help protect its' users from malicious software. There does exist a danger for the new webmaster of unknowingly placing badware in your web pages, or being hacked and having such software placed on your servers without your knowledge. To understand fully what makes a site a "Badware" site you can look to the StopBadware.org Guidelines.
Avoid Redirect Pages:
Redirect pages are keyword-stuffed landing pages that quickly redirect to the real page. These pages don't necessarily contain content that any human would be interested in. They are meant to show up high in search engine results pages (PR). When you click on one of these pages from the results, you are redirected to another page–usually a high-pressure sales page. In other words, the page you click to see is not the page you actually get to read. Sneaky redirection pages are set up in groups. They target similar and related keywords or phrases. The only links on these pages are links to other pages in the same family, creating a false sense of related linking. The redirect can be automatic, done with a meta refresh command, or through other means (such as mouse moving while on the redirect page).
Don’t stop updating your website:
Provide unique and relevant content all the time and keep them fresh. Yes indeed, relevant content counts. Not every content of course, just quality one. That’s what search engines are pleased with. In the past, search engines were focused mainly on meta keywords, description and title. This way they could be easily fooled, anyone could populate these tags. Nowadays, their main goal is to provide quality pages, with quality content. Once again Keep in mind, content makes the difference today. Quality content means that it is useful to the visitors. Refreshing your content as often as possible will bring visitors back. Every website’s goal is to keep visitors, and not to send them to the competition.
Linking to Unrelated Sites or Bad Neighborhoods:
Linking to bad neighborhoods is a sure way to lose your ranking or even getting banned. If you aren't careful about who you are linking to, you can easily disappear overnight. Basically, while you may be ethical and do everything right, linking to someone who isn't can be considered guilt by association. Always verify your links to other sites. Make sure they have page rank and are indexed by Google. Avoid linking to any sites that use spamming techniques to increase their search engine rankings. Regularly checking outbound links from your site and removing any offenders is a good idea. A few different types of sites to avoid are free-for-all link farms, adult sites, and gambling sites.
Yes, it’s a little time consuming and tough to do thing ethically and the right way. Remember doing thign right is the only way to be successful.
